The scales are riveted to stainless steel liners, and each tool locks into place with individual leaf springs rather than a single shared mechanism. Victorinox has been making these in Ibach, Switzerland since 1897 and still supplies them to the Swiss military.

Double-wall steel construction with 16-gauge top and bottom panels — thicker than most competitors who use 20-22 gauge. Ball-bearing drawer slides rated for heavy loads, and the drawers themselves won't sag under a full set of sockets. Snap-on's older KR-series boxes from pre-2000 are particularly tank-like, but even current models hold up in professional shop environments where they get opened hundreds of times a day.

Drop-forged from chrome vanadium steel, then oil-hardened and tempered — a process that makes the jaws significantly harder than standard pliers without becoming brittle. The Cobolt series cuts hardened wire up to 64 HRC. Made in Wuppertal, Germany with tight tolerances that keep the jaws aligned even after years of heavy use. The BIFL community treats these like the gold standard for pliers, and professional electricians tend to agree.

Most models use CPM-S30V or S90V blade steel — powder metallurgy steels with fine carbide structure that hold an edge far longer than conventional stainless. The AXIS lock mechanism uses a hardened steel bar riding in a track milled into stainless liners, creating one of the strongest folding knife locks ever designed. Single piece of cast iron with no coatings, welds, rivets, or bonded layers to fail. People routinely cook on Lodge skillets from the 1950s and 1960s. The material actually improves with use as the seasoning builds up.

VG-MAX cutting core steel clad in 34 layers of Damascus stainless — the layered construction isn't just decorative, it protects the hard core steel from lateral stress. The core is hardened to 60-61 HRC, which holds an edge significantly longer than German knives (typically 56-58 HRC). The Birchwood line uses SG2 micro-carbide powder steel hardened to 63 HRC, one of the hardest production kitchen knife steels available. The 100+ layer Damascus cladding protects the thin core steel from corrosion. Ice-hardened (cryogenically treated) to refine the grain structure and improve edge retention.

Solid Sitka spruce tops and solid rosewood or mahogany backs/sides — no laminates on the higher-end models. Dovetail neck joints (traditional models) or mortise-and-tenon joints create a mechanical connection that transmits vibration better and holds tighter than bolt-on designs. Martin guitars from the 1930s-1960s are still played professionally today and have appreciated in value.
