The XTherm's 4.5 R-value comes from Therm-a-Rest's Triangular Core Matrix construction — horizontal baffles with a reflective film that blocks radiant heat loss from the body through the pad to the ground. The shell is a 30D nylon with ThermaCapture coating on the interior surface. The pad inflates to 2.5 inches of air insulation for a 13-ounce weight. Therm-a-Rest pioneered the self-inflating pad in 1971 and manufactures in Mukilteo, Washington. Their warranty covers material defects and they publish repair kits for field patching.

The X Series is available in either Corten weathering steel (develops a protective rust patina that prevents further corrosion) or 304 stainless steel.
