The automatic transmissions in the 8th generation (2008-2012) and later finally resolved the earlier generation's transmission failures. Honda uses galvanized steel body panels that resist rust better than most competitors. Independent mechanics universally recommend Accords as low-cost-of-ownership vehicles.

The 1993-2011 Ford Ranger with the 4.0L SOHC V6 or the 2.3L Duratec four-cylinder is mechanically simple and over-built for a compact truck. The 5-speed manual transmission (Mazda M5OD) is nearly indestructible. The body-on-frame design allows frame and body repairs independently. Parts are absurdly cheap and available everywhere because Ford made millions of these.
