The inner cooking pot is 18/8 stainless steel with a 3-ply base — it's the same material you'd find in professional restaurant steam-table inserts and will never rust, chip, or absorb flavors. The pressure regulation system uses redundant safety mechanisms: a pressure release valve, an anti-block shield, and an overheat sensor that cuts power before damage occurs. All key components — sealing ring, steam release valve, lid — are individually replaceable through Instant Pot directly. The heating element is encased in the base with no exposed coils to corrode.
The silicone sealing ring absorbs odors (especially from curries and stocks) and needs replacement every 1-2 years — Instant Pot sells them for $8-12. The electronics (display, control board) are the real failure point — a board replacement can approach the cost of a new unit. The manufacturer's warranty is only 1 year. Instant Pot was acquired by Pyrex parent company Cornell Capital and has had some product line confusion since. Not infinitely repairable — when electronics fail, repair isn't practical.

Single piece of cast iron with no coatings, welds, rivets, or bonded layers to fail. The iron is virtually indestructible under normal kitchen use — it can crack if thermally shocked (ice water in a screaming hot pan), but that's about it. Pre-seasoned from the factory. People routinely cook on Lodge skillets from the 1950s and 1960s. The material actually improves with use as the seasoning builds up.
