Why It Lasts

The Campus boot uses Frye's Antique-Pull-Up leather — a full-grain cattlehide that's drum-stuffed with oils and waxes at the tannery, making it naturally water-resistant from the fiber level rather than relying on topical treatments. The harness stitching is tripled — three passes of waxed thread through the heavy leather — and uses a saddle stitch pattern that, unlike lockstitch, only unravels one stitch at a time if cut. Frye has been making boots in the US since 1863, and the Campus is their heritage workhorse. The Goodyear welt allows resoling.

Known Weaknesses

Frye quality has declined since the company was acquired by Global Brands Group (2012) and then went through bankruptcy (2019). Current production no longer carries the full American-made quality of vintage Frye. The Women's boot line maintains better reviews than the Men's. The leather is soft and beautiful but dents and creases more visibly than harder pull-up leathers from Red Wing. The leather sole on some Campus models is slippery — have a cobbler add a rubber half-sole immediately upon purchase.

About This Product

The Frye Company For more than 153 years, Frye craftsmen have been dedicated to the art of shoemaking, creating modern patterns, discovering materials and even inventing machinery. Rooted in authentic American heritage, The Frye Company uses the best leathers, designs and innovations in the pursuit of timeless, artisanal style. Frye boots were worn by soldiers on both sides of America's Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-American war, and by Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. When homesteading drew adventurous New England families to the West during the mid and late 1800's many of the pioneers wore Frye Boots for the long journey. Today Frye remains true to its roots with its line of heritage boots, but continues to innovate as it introduces chic new handbags, pumps, and sandals to its collection. Frye’s mission, to make iconic leather goods that endure, has remained unchanged throughout its storied history. Campus 14L An American symbol of rebellion and freedom, The Campus 14L is our quintessential icon. Crafted from our signature crunch leather, these knee high boots are well-known both on and off campus. The handcrafted silhouette and chunky toe paired with a stacked heel will get you to your destination, come rain or shine. Made in USA and sourced from domestic and imported products.

Thorogood Men's American Heritage 6" Moc Toe Wedge Work Boot

Built in Merrill, Wisconsin on a Goodyear Storm Welt — a welt variant that wraps around the entire perimeter including the heel, making these even more resoleable than a standard welt. The upper uses full-grain American leather on a single-density Poron XRD foam footbed over a fiberglass shank. The MAXWear Wedge outsole is a dense Vibram compound that wears slower than crepe or standard rubber. Thorogood has been making work boots since 1892 and these are consistently recommended by tradespeople on r/workboots and r/BuyItForLife.

Danner Mountain Light II 5” Gore-Tex Waterproof Hiking Boots for Men with...

The original Mountain Light (1980) pioneered the combination of Goodyear welt construction with a waterproof Gore-Tex bootie — Danner runs the Gore-Tex liner up through the entire boot shaft, not just the foot box. The upper uses full-grain leather from Horween in Chicago. The stitchdown construction bonds upper to midsole mechanically rather than adhesively, allowing resoling. Made in Portland, Oregon. The Vibram Kletterlift outsole is deep-lugged for off-trail traction.

Allen Edmonds mens Park Avenue Cap Toe Oxford Dress Boot

Goodyear welted in Port Washington, Wisconsin using genuine shell cordovan or calfskin from Horween Leather Company. The Park Avenue uses a 360-degree welt — the most complete welt possible — and a leather midsole with a metal shank. Allen Edmonds offers a Recrafting service ($150) that strips the shoe to the upper, replaces every sole and filler, and returns it with a new factory finish. Men report getting 20-30 years from a pair with proper care and periodic recrafting.
