Why It Lasts
Solid Sitka spruce tops and solid rosewood or mahogany backs/sides — no laminates on the higher-end models. Dovetail neck joints (traditional models) or mortise-and-tenon joints create a mechanical connection that transmits vibration better and holds tighter than bolt-on designs. Martin guitars from the 1930s-1960s are still played professionally today and have appreciated in value. The forward-shifted X-bracing pattern distributes string tension across the top without excessive reinforcement.
Known Weaknesses
Solid wood is sensitive to humidity changes — low humidity causes the top to crack, and Martin recommends keeping them at 45-55% relative humidity. The finish on older models checks and cracks over time (some players prefer this, others don't). Newer Mexican-made models in the lower lines don't have the same material quality as US-made instruments. Expensive to repair if the top does crack or the bridge lifts.
